In the frame of a research project named “Modelling the Spatiotemporal Circulation of International Coins : An Attempt to Map Territorial Integration in Europe through Ages” that I am conducted at the European University Institute of Florence, I am collaborating with AOROC researchers, and most especially with the group working on pre-industrial economies.
Before joining the EUI as a Jean Monnet Fellow in September 2014, I was a PhD researcher in the geography and spatial planning departments of the University Paris Diderot – Paris 7 and of the University of Luxembourg (2010-2014). My PhD project entitled “International circulations in Europe at the beginning of the XXIst century. From the study of Euro coins spatial distribution to the modelling of a complex system.” has benefited from a four year grant from the Fond National de la Recherche of Luxembourg.
During my PhD, I have been studying and modelling the diffusion of Euro coins across the Eurozone both empirically and theoretically. I have demonstrated that the study of coins circulation is indeed a relevant tool to measure human mobility and exchanges between territories through time in the absence of data. A significant presence of coins at a point of the European territory signals the existence of multiple paths from the diverse places of minting to that point. Therefore it constitutes a marker of international openness particularly interesting from a geographic, historical or political perspective. Several papers have been published / submitted to publication out of my Phd work. More particularly, I have intended to contribute to the fields of European studies, theoretical and quantitative geography, economic and historical geography and regional sciences.
During these four years I have also got the opportunity to teach some of my research specialities in several French universities (University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, University Paris Est-Créteil, and University of Reims-Champagne Ardennes). My theoretical and practical teachings were mainly related to the analysis of spatio-temporal facts and regional geography. They were both dedicated to undergraduate and graduate students.
